Newcastle United hit by fresh injury blow with January signing sidelined

Newcastle United have been hit with another injury blow after Eddie Howe revealed January signing Harrison Ashby was in the treatment room.

The right-back - who came in from West Ham earlier this year - was paraded on the pitch ahead of the Southampton League Cup semi-final second leg along with Anthony Gordon. But he has yet to step on to the field of play for Newcastle since his switch from the London Stadium.

Howe said: "Harrison's picked up a very small hamstring problem. So he hasn't trained with the group for a few weeks."

Newcastle now face Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest before the international break in two must win fixtures after the Magpies slipped out of the top four. Looking ahead to the next two matches, Howe reflected today: "They're two big games because of where they're situated with the international break.

"We want to go into that break in a really good moment."We're determined to end this run of games in a confident way."

Howe also spoke of a few 'minor' knocks for certain players following the defeat to Manchester City. "We hope Fabian Schär will be in the squad. He's trained well this week so I'm pleased to see him bac," Howe said.

"We have a couple of knocks from the Man City game but we hope it's nothing too serious."
