Newcastle United headlines: Neymar link "silly", Tom Allan honesty and Supermac's Bruno praise

Your Newcastle United evening headlines for Saturday, June 4.

Neymar link is “silly”

Simon Jordan has laughed off suggestions that Newcastle could sign Brazilian superstar Neymar. Dubious reports have linked the PSG forward with a move to St James’ Park as Toon chiefs look to make waves in the transfer market.

The French giants splashed out a world-record fee for Neymar in 2017 and would command a sizable offer as he is contracted until 2025. Former Crystal Palace owner Jordan does not believe signing players of the 30-year-old’s ilk should be the Magpies’ blueprint.

"Neymar isn't going to Newcastle so it's a silly conversation because Newcastle aren't in that position,” he told talkSPORT. “Neymar is a global superstar and I think sometimes he is the embodiment of the modern-day footballer, with all the talent and a lack of regard for the opportunity they're given.

“He isn't going to Newcastle so we might as well keep our powder dry.

"Newcastle want to build a side that can win something. I'm not sure that digging out people like Neymar and paying them £100m a year is the blueprint."

“It’s about being honest” - Allan

Tom Allan has opened up on his footballing future after being released by Newcastle last month. The 22-year-old was one of 13 players to face the axe as the club overhauls its youth academy.

Speaking to Newcastle Fans TV, Allan admitted he suspected his Magpies career was coming to an end. He said: “To be honest you’ve just got to be real with yourself. I’m 22 now, if I was going to be breaking into the first team, it would’ve happened two years ago when I was in and around it. It’s just about being honest with yourself and a fresh start is what I need now.

“I hope that’s the case anyway. I think being in and around the first team for the two years that I had helped with the situation I’m in now. There’s been some conversations with clubs but I go to Barcelona on Friday so I’m going to go there, enjoy that and then come back and sit down to see what options I have.”

‘I want Bruno to be the benchmark’ - Supermac

Newcastle legend and ChronicleLive columnist Malcolm Macdonald believes Bruno Guimaraes has set the bar for future Toon transfers. Five players arrived in January, with the Brazilian the most eye-catching due to his £35million price tag.

Guimaraes was the only addition with no previous Premier League experience but his impressive form has seen him emerge as the latest cult hero at St James’ Park. Now, one of the magpies’ greatest ever goalscorers has paid homage to the midfielder.

“I want Bruno to be the benchmark for who comes in,” Malcolm wrote. “The standard expected. When top, top players arrive at Manchester City or Liverpool they don't stand out. They blend in because there are so many quality players already in the club.

“That is the way it has to be and I'm certain Bruno wants it that way. The more quality United have the better the results and therefore the better it is for everyone concerned.”
