Newcastle United headlines as Trippier hails youngster & Almiron gets Howe's backing

Here are your Newcastle United evening headlines for Wednesday, July 27.

Trippier hails youngster Bondswell

Newcastle United right-back Kieran Trippier has heaped praised on Matt Bondswell after his impressive performance in the Magpies’ 3-2 defeat to Benfica in Lisbon. The 20-year-old left-back replaced Matt Targett at the break and made a good impression with a steady display during the second half.

Bondswell has earned plaudits from Newcastle supporters after the Eusebio Cup defeat, as questions arise over whether he could force his way into Eddie Howe’s plans this season. Trippier was also keen to highlight his performance.

“I thought it was a great experience for a lot of players, coming to a place like this it’s always difficult,” Trippier told NUFC TV. “I think you look at Matt who played left-back, I thought he was outstanding.”

Howe tips Almiron for strong campaign

Eddie Howe believes Miguel Almiron could be set for a ‘prosperous’ season following his brace in Newcastle United’s 3-2 defeat against Benfica.

Almiron struck two equalisers, and produced an all-round impressive display, as the Magpies were narrowly defeated in Lisbon on Tuesday. The Paraguay skipper scored just once for the Magpies last term and Howe wants to see more of the same from his display against Benfica.

Howe said: “It was excellent from Miggy and he could have scored another one as well. So getting goals from him in good goal scoring positions was great. His finishing was excellent, his second goal in particular was a great finish.”

Joelinton red card reaction

Joelinton will miss Newcastle United’s pre-season friendly against Atalanta on Friday after picking up a record card against Benfica. The Brazilian midfielder will face a one-match suspension after receiving two yellow cards in quick succession in Lisbon.

He was only introduced at the break as Eddie Howe made 11 changes. The 25-year-old first dived into a late challenge on Benfica star Rafa, before committing another late tackle on Florentino. Howe will now be unable to select Joelinton for Friday’s clash with Atalanta, but with two games in less than 24 hours this weekend, he will likely be included against Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.

“I’m disappointed, to be honest. For me, in pre-season friendlies, the last thing I want to see is a red card for either team unless there is a tackle that is really out of the spirit of the game. I don’t think Joelinton’s tackles were,” Howe revealed post-match to the media.”
