Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe knows there are more transfer talks on the horizon after an opening round of discussions with Dan Ashworth in Riyadh.

The Magpies currently sit third in the Premier League table and are absolutely in the conversation for a Champions League spot this term.

A couple of good additions in January could go a long way to helping Howe and co realise their European ambitions way ahead of schedule.

But Howe made it clear he didn’t see the need for the chats to be built up as transfer summits so to speak. And he knows there are many twists and turns before the window even swings open on January 1.

He said: "It was just conversations at this stage. I think the big thing is that there’s a lot that can change between now and January, so we’ve talked and had discussions about what it may look like, but there’s such a long time before that window opens, we’re still very flexible in terms of what we’re going to do."

Eddie Howe hopes the 'talented' youngsters who featured in Newcastle United's friendly win against Al Hilal will play an 'important part' in the club's future.

Dylan Stephenson, Joe White, Jay Turner-Cooke, Alex Murphy and 16-year-old Lewis Miley all got a taste of first-team action after coming off the bench in the 5-0 win at the Prince Faisal bin Fahd Stadium on Thursday.

It was a night the quintet will never forget and Stephenson even marked the occasion with a goal after scoring Newcastle's fifth following a smart finish in the 86th minute.

With his World Cup contingent absent, Howe was keen to take a look at the club's hottest prospects as well as putting his first-team regulars through their paces in Riyadh.

"When you go on trips like this, you're looking to benefit not just the first team but the staff and also giving academy players an opportunity as part of what we want to do on a regular basis," Howe told NUFC TV.

Newcastle transfer could be 'superb move' for £34m-rated 'target' now linked to Man Utd

Goncalo Ramos could prove to be a man in demand after a marking his first World Cup start with a scintillating hat-trick.

The young Benfica striker was called upon to replace Cristiano Ronaldo and helped lead Portugal to a stunning knockout rout of Switzerland to book a quarter-final spot.

Ramos netted a treble on his first international start in the 6-1 victory on Tuesday night, and is surely a shoo-in to keep his starting spot in the upcoming clash with Morocco on Saturday.

Newcastle United were among the Premier League clubs credited with an interest in Ramos over the summer. Reports from Portugal indicated the Magpies were leading the race for the striker's signature, only to opt for a club-record move for Alexander Isak.

And Portuguese football expert and founder of website PortuGOAL.net Tom Kundert believes a move to Tyneside would be an excellent one for Ramos.

Kundert said: "I think I'd see this as a great move for Ramos, it is quite an exciting project to join. I'm pretty sure if any of the top talents in Portugal will look to make the move to England, I think Newcastle will be one of the clubs that they're looking to join.
