Newcastle United headlines as Magpies await Joao Pedro response and Callum Wilson injury update

Here are the latest Newcastle United evening headlines for Monday, August 23.

Magpies waiting for positive Joao Pedro response

Newcastle United are awaiting a response from Watford after submitting a new bid for Joao Pedro. Eddie Howe stated this morning that news that a bid had been accepted was not "entirely accurate" and Chronicle Live understands that while Pedro is satisfied with personal terms on offer from United, the overall package still needs to be ironed out.

The add ons that go with Newcastle's initial transfer fee were not deemed suitable by Watford as they included European qualification in future years.

But United are hopeful of getting a deal done on the 20-year-old and feel that the player will bring competition to their frontline.

Howe gives Wilson injury update

Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson will undergo a scan after coming off against Manchester City during the 3-3 draw.

The Magpies star has netted two goals in three Premier League games so far this season and is certain to be rested against Tranmere Rovers for the League Cup second round clash at Prenton Park. Eddie Howe is hoping that the scan does not deliver disappointing news.

He said today: "He's OK, the normal process is he goes for a scan and we wait for the results, we hope it's not too serious."

Academy stars set to feature against Tranmere

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe has given two rising stars from the club's academy a chance to impress ahead of the Carabao Cup clash against Tranmere. Lewis Miley and Michael Ndiweni both took part in the first-team training session at Benton on Monday as the Magpies were put through their paces less than 24 hours following the thrilling draw with Manchester City.

The encounter with the Premier League champions kicked off a hectic fortnight for Newcastle both on and off the pitch. Howe's side now face three consecutive away fixtures, starting with a televised second-round cup tie at League Two side Tranmere Rovers on Wednesday night.
