Newcastle United headlines as Jack Grealish reveals Miguel Almiron apology after last season jibe

Here are your Newcastle United evening headlines on Friday, December 2.

Jack Grealish breaks silence on Miguel Almiron jibe with apology for 'stupid' dig at Newcastle star

Jack Grealish admits he regrets his now infamous jibe at Miguel Almiron's expense. However, the England international insists he is 'buzzing' with the Newcastle United star's response following a sensational start to the season.

Grealish used an unflattering comparison with Almiron to describe team-mate Riyad Mahrez's performance on the final day of last season during Manchester City's title celebrations in May.

The former Aston Villa captain argued Mahrez deserved to be substituted for "playing like Almiron."

The Paraguay international had struggled to make an impact under Eddie Howe since his arrival back in November 2021. However, the 28-year-old has been a player reborn this term, and was named the Premier League's Player of the Month for October.

“When I said earlier that sometimes I do stupid stuff, that was one," Grealish said of his Almiron comment.

"I regret that. I swear, I’m actually buzzing the way he’s reacted. He said something about me in the interview the other day, he wished me the best."

Gary Neville drops Kieran Trippier England hint after Newcastle star was benched by Gareth Southgate

Gary Neville expects Kyle Walker to continue as England's right back ahead of their World Cup knockout tie with Senegal.

Newcastle United's Kieran Trippier started the first two Group B fixtures, but was replaced by the Manchester City star for the 3-0 victory over Wales on Tuesday night.

England have so far setup with a back four, although previous tournaments show Gareth Southgate may switch to a back five should they reach the latter stages, which could see Trippier start at right wing-back.

However, with France potentially waiting in the quarter finals should England beat Senegal, Neville reckons Southgate will stick with Walker and a back four in order to deal with the threat of Kylian Mbappe.

"I'm sure Kyle will stay in at right back, that looks like a collision course waiting to happen, Mbappe versus Walker," said Neville.

Jamaal Lascelles highlights 'good people' Newcastle United truth behind transfer spending

Jamaal Lascelles has praised Newcastle United’s owners for their sensible work in the transfer window. The Toon skipper knows many people drew comparisons with Man City’s takeover when Mike Ashley sold the club to PIF last year.

But Lascelles insists Newcastle aren’t operating like an organisation simply throwing money around as suggested by some observers.

"People might just say we are throwing money about but I think we have been spot on the way we have done it," said Lascelles.

"We have picked up good people and good leaders."
