Newcastle United headlines as Isaac Hayden praises Magpies boss Eddie Howe

A look at the latest Newcastle United headlines on Saturday, June 11.

Isaac Hayden explains classy Eddie Howe gesture after Newcastle United exit

Departing midfielder Isaac Hayden will always be fondly remembered on Tyneside. Hayden arrived at St James' Park after Newcastle were relegated to the Championship following the 2015/16 season and helped them earn promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

However, in recent seasons, the midfielder has seen his minutes cut short due to the arrival of new additions and different managerial preferences.

A knee injury in December meant Hayden missed out on Newcastle's 25-man squad for the second half of the Premier League season.

With the likes of Sean Longstaff, Joelinton, Jonjo Shelvey, Joe Willock and Bruno Guimaraes all ahead of him in the pecking order, Hayden has moved to Norwich on loan which will in all likelihood become a permanent deal, ending his Newcastle career.

But despite his six year spell on Tyneside ending in less than ideal fashion, Hayden has praised boss Eddie Howe calling him "the right manager at the right time."

"Although I've left, the manager was very, very good to me. In terms of our relationship, he called me yesterday even though he is on his holidays. We still speak regularly and I don't think it was anything personal from his side," said Hayden.

'Better signing than Bruno Guimaraes' - Paul Merson hails Dan Burn’s Newcastle United impact

Paul Merson believes Dan Burn has been a better signing for Newcastle United than Brazilian international Bruno Guimaraes.

Burn signed for his boyhood club Newcastle in January from Brighton and immediately shored up the Magpies defence. The towering centre-back was one of Newcastle's players of the season despite only playing the second half of the campaign in black and white.

Big name defenders like Sven Botman and Diego Carlos were linked at the start of the January transfer window but Newcastle ended up signing Burn after ultimately missing out on the other two.

However, Burn performed exemplary, which led Merson to believe he has been a better signing for Newcastle than Guimaraes.

"He's [Burn] already played a big role for Newcastle under the new ownership and has been a better signing than Bruno Guimaraes, for me," said Merson.

Supermac calls for Newcastle to sell Jamaal Lascelles and Jonjo Shelvey

Legendary Newcastle forward Malcolm Macdonald believes the Magpies should sell first-team duo Jamaal Lascelles and Jonjo Shelvey.

While Shelvey played the majority of games under Eddie Howe, Lascelles lost his first team spot to the combination of Dan Burn and Fabian Schar during the second half of the Premier League campaign.

"I would also make big decisions and move on Jamaal Lascelles, Jonjo Shelvey and Jamal Lewis to make room to people coming in," Supermac wrote in his ChronicleLive column.

"Lascelles has lost his automatic first team place and will drop further down the pecking order when another central defender is signed."
