Toon trio make the cut
Callum Wilson, Kieran Trippier and Nick Pope will all be representing England at the 2022 World Cup after earning a place in Gareth Southgate's 26-man squad for the Qatar showpiece. The Three Lions chief announced his tournament selection on Thursday, ending weeks of speculation regarding who would make the cut.
Trippier and Pope were always expected to make the winter tournament barring any injury setbacks but Wilson's selection was up for debate despite his stellar form in front of goal for Newcastle of late.

Wilson opens up
Wilson has relived one of his career-threatening injuries in an emotional post following his World Cup call-up.
“(It is an) absolute honour to be called up to represent my country for a World Cup,” he shared on Instagram. “(It is) something I’ve dreamed about since a little boy and will cherish every moment of!

“In 2017, while recovering from my second ACL injury in Qatar, having never represented my country at this point. I said to myself before I left ‘I will be back to play in the 2022 World Cup’.
“Dedication and hard work shows how you can achieve anything! I can’t wait to meet up with the lads and work even harder together now to achieve greatness.”

Hodgson on Wilson inclusion
Former England manager Roy Hodgson believes Premier League and international experience helped Wilson pip Ivan Toney to a World Cup spot.
He told Sky Sports: “It would have been a hard choice. I know his (Wilson) background, and I've always admired him. He has come through enormous hardships to get where he is today, not least coming back from many injury situations.
"I don't know so much about Ivan Toney but he's got a similar background, I think. He’s done quite brilliantly to get from where he started to where he is today.
“It’s quite simply a case of Gareth choosing which of the two players’ qualities suit him best. There's a degree of similarity they have; they're both players who can lead the line.
“But he might be tempted by the fact Callum does have a lot more experience at Premier League level whereas Ivan has burst onto the scene this year."

Toon supporters' taste for more
The dramatic win against Crystal Palace will have given Nick Pope just a little taste. The goalkeeper repeatedly had his name chanted by supporters and was mobbed by his team-mates after his three saves in the shootout sent Newcastle into the last 16 of the Carabao Cup at St James' Park on Wednesday night. Could you imagine the scenes if Newcastle won a trophy?

Clark behind-the-scenes impact
Ciaran Clark has featured for just 170 minutes in the league so far this season, but Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom says his experience off the pitch has been of great value to the Blades. The 33-year-old has joined on a season-long loan from Newcastle but his time at Bramall Lane has mainly been plagued by injury.
"He's a great kid. A really good personality," he told our sister title YorkshireLive. "If you speak to the managers who have had him, which we did before we took him, they all spoke really highly of him as someone you would want in your team, in the dressing room.
"I think he's a player's player as well, the lads like him. I think you saw when he was on the pitch (Bristol City) straight away there was a lot of organising, a lot of leadership, which I liked. "He's been there, seen it, done it. We brought him for that experience.
