Newcastle United headlines: Alexander Isak hails 'character' and worrying Miguel Almiron update

Your Newcastle United headlines for Saturday, March 18.

Isak hails character

Alexander Isak has hailed the Magpies' character after their 2-1 win at the City Ground. His double in the East Midlands kept Newcastle on course for Champions League football with United just a point behind Tottenham Hotspur. United now fly directly to Dubai for a warm-weather training camp.

After the game and his man of the match display, Isak said: "We know it is a hard ground to come and take three points and we got off to a bad start but the team showed good character.

"I think we showed great character and kept pushing the disallowed goal didn't change our momentum we kept controlling the game and had chances. We are always dangerous and create chances it is just a matter of whether it goes in or not."

Shelvey's 'whinge bag' joke

Jonjo Shelvey joked that his former colleagues were a team of "whingebags" after Nottingham Forest were floored in stoppage time.

After the game Shelvey said: "I didn't think they (Newcastle) would whinge as much as they did on the pitch. But it is a game of football. I represent this football club now.

"I will give it my all. But yeah, a lot of whingebags in their team. I’ll tell them that, only in a jokey way. I hope they get into Europe and have just positive words about the club."

Miggy injury blow

Eddie Howe says he expects Miguel Almiron to be missing for six weeks after picking up a nightmare injury in training.

Howe said post-match: "Miggy pulled a thigh muscle in training. Unfortunately, it’s quite a bad one. It’s going to be six weeks."

Howe just as confused

Kieran Trippier's penalty masterstroke even had his own manager confused at the City Ground last night.

The impromptu moment left Nottingham Forest keeper Keylor Navas playing mind games with a player that wasn't even going to step forward for the game's crucial moment. But Trippier's piece of genius in stoppage time could now be repeated throughout the football world as Newcastle took things to the next level in terms in terms of getting into the head of opponents during the run-in.

Howe said last night: "I’d love to take the credit for that because it was good, but Alex is our penalty taker. He took our last penalty against Bournemouth and put that away really well. Kieran had the ball, so I was a little bit confused, but it was great to see Alex take it so well."

Ex-ref fumes at VAR call

Former Premier League whistler Mark Halsey branded Elliot Anderson's controversial disallowed goal as "nonsense". He told the Sun: "The offside law is an ass.

"It’s a nonsense decision. Surely it’s a deliberate play by Forest defender Felipe? But goals being ruled out for something like this does not sit right with me."

Academy boss Steve Harper also took to Twitter in the heat of the moment and questioned the officials. He posted: "That’s a dreadful VAR decision! How is it offside when two Forest players have intentionally played the ball before Longstaff becomes active."
