Newcastle United have one or two things bubbling away and could avoid transfer deadline day dash

Newcastle United have got 'one or two things bubbling away' in the final week of the transfer window but Steve Bruce does not think they will go down to the wire.

The Magpies have made two permanent signings this summer in Joelinton and Allan Saint-Maximin while Jetro Willems has joined on an initial season-long loan deal.

Bruce is happy with what Newcastle have done in the transfer market since being appointed last month and feels any further additions will be a bonus as he targets quality rather than quantity in the final days of the window.

It is never the ideal scenario, but Newcastle have done business on deadline day in recent years. Federico Fernandez and Miguel Almiron arrived on the final day of the summer and January windows respectively last season while loan deals for Christian Atsu, Islam Slimani and Kenedy were completed on deadline day in recent years.

But Bruce does not foresee Newcastle being active in the final hours of the window on Thursday.

"I really wouldn't think so," he told reporters when asked if it could go to the wire. "We've got one or two things bubbling away but if it closed tomorrow, I'm delighted with what we've done.

"We've spent a hell of a lot of money on two players, two quality players, which I think is the way forward rather than having six or eight. The way forward now, for me anyway, is quality and you can see a bit of quality in what we've brought in today."

Newcastle fans got a glimpse of their new arrivals in the club's final pre-season friendly against Saint-Etienne, with Joelinton marking his home debut with a goal and Saint-Maximin and Willems both impressing with their second-half cameos.

Having lost Salomon Rondon and Ayoze Perez, who scored 55% of the Magpies' league goals last season, the priority this summer was bringing in firepower.

And, with five forwards on his books, Bruce feels the black-and-whites have got a variety of options up front following Joelinton and Saint-Maximin's arrivals.

"They certainly fit my profile because like I've always said, since I've come into this job - not this Newcastle job, management - you're only as good as your strikers," he added.

"They've certainly given us a new dimension in terms of their pace and their power and something different. They're both different.

"With Muto, who I've been very, very impressed with and Almiron, and Dwight Gayle, we have got a nice balance up there. Let's hope they can score the goals that every club in the Premier League needs to do."
