Newcastle United have one option with unwanted squad members after deadline day stalemate

Newcastle United have been left with only one choice with a clutch of squad players after deadline day failed to find new clubs for some of Steve Bruce’s unwanted list.

A last-gasp deal for Rolando Aarons fell through with Huddersfield Town while Christian Atsu, Henri Saivet and Achraf Lazaar all failed to find new clubs.

Bruce had suggested that it was difficult to move some players on because of their current weekly wage.

But it means the foursome are now facing either a life of training with the reserves or the club coming to a financial arrangement to free them up.

United did something similar with former Swansea City and Sunderland man Ki earlier this year before he found a club in Real Mallorca.

Bruce had started the day saying: “The phone has to ring for them. I am sure they are as disappointed we can’t get them fixed up because they need to move on with their careers.”

All four will see their contracts expire in June and unless they move in January they could sit on their lucrative wages until then - unless they are offered an acceptable pay off.
