Newcastle United have NOT spoken to Gennaro Gattuso after Italian leaves AC Milan

Newcastle United have not made any moves to speak to Gennaro Gattuso - despite reports in Italy touting him as a replacement for Rafa Benitez.

Gattuso left AC Milan last week and is interested in a switch to the Premier League.

But United have been focused on Benitez since the season ended.

The media in Italy have suggested that St James’ Park could be Gattuso’s next destination.

But we understand that no discussions have taken place with United and Gattuso’s representatives.

Gattuso had said last week: “Deciding to leave Milan’s bench is not easy. But it’s a decision I had to make.

“There was not a precise moment in which I decided it: it was the sum of these 18 months as coach of a team that for me will never be like the others.

“Months that I lived with great passion, unforgettable months. It is a painful but thoughtful choice.

“Am I giving up a two-year contract? Yes, because my story with Milan can never be a question of money.”

Gattuso has also been linked with Sampdoria.
