Newcastle United have Brentford standing in the way of a League Cup semi-final

Newcastle United will face Sky Bet Championship opposition in the quarter-finals of the League Cup in the shape of Brentford.

The Bees are now playing at the Brentford Community Stadium after moving from Griffin Park and former Toon reserve Ivan Toney will be waiting for them in the capital.

But after avoiding the big boys like Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United - Steve Bruce will be relatively happy with the draw.

The tie will be played the week commencing December 21 with Bruce eager to deliver a semi-final place.

This year's last four matches will also take place over just one game but Newcastle face a tough test against Thomas Frank's side.

Brentford knocked out Fulham in a 3-0 win and beat Southampton away earlier in the competition.

The two sides met in the competition back in 2001 on a night when Craig Bellamy scored a hat-trick in a 4-1 win for Sir Bobby Robson's side.

Their last meeting took place in the Championship in 2017 when Newcastle won 2-1 at Brentford's old ground.
