Newcastle United handed trip to Tranmere Rovers in Carabao Cup second round

Newcastle United will travel to Prenton Park for the second round of the League Cup as they face their old cup adversaries Tranmere Rovers.

The Magpies plucked out a trip to the Wirral after Tranmere beat Accrington Stanley 12-11 on penalties last night in Lancashire. It sets up a repeat of the 1998 tie - in round three - when Paul Dalglish scored the winner during the Ruud Gullit era. Newcastle have faced Tranmere in the FA Cup since then with a 3-2 FA Cup win against Rovers in 2000.

The tie will also bring back memories for some of the 6-6 Zenith Data Systems Cup tie back in 1991 when Newcastle scored half a dozen but were then beaten on penalties!

On a night when all three of the other North-East sides were dumped out of the competition with Sunderland well beaten at Sheff Wed, Middlesbrough stunned by Barnsley in last seconds of stoppage time and Hartlepool suffering a 4-0 rout at Blackburn Rovers, Newcastle are now flying the flag for the region in the competition.

The second round will be played across August 22 to 25 with Newcastle in the northern section of the competition. United have not won the League Cup but did make it to the final in 1976 when they were beaten at the old Wembley by Man City.
