Newcastle United handed Premier League test in Carabao Cup draw

Newcastle United have landed a home tie in the second round of the Carabao Cup this season.

However, on a night when they could have landed League One or League Two opponents former Aston Villa star Andy Townsend plucked Premier League Burnley out of the hat.

The tie will be played on August 24th or 25th with Newcastle hoping to have another run in the competition.

United progressed to the quarter-finals of the League Cup last season but were beaten by Brentford in the latter stages.

Newcastle fans were furious with the level of performance that night and will be eager to see the club take the competition as seriously as possible this term.

Burnley were beaten at the round three stage last term when they faced eventual winners Manchester City.

This is the second time in the space of three years since Newcastle landed top-flight opponents early in the competition.

Back in 2019, Steve Bruce's side were knocked out on penalties against Leicester City.
