Newcastle United handed good luck charm ahead of crunch Watford clash

Newcastle United will have the presence of something of a 'lucky charm' when they face Watford in a relegation battle six-pointer this weekend.

As fans will be all to well aware, the Magpies have only one victory this season, with that coming against Burnley, who also have only one win to their name.

However, the referee that day was Paul Tierney, who has been appointed for Saturday's crunch match and Newcastle will hope that his presence as the man-in-the-middle will bring the luck they need for another three points for Eddie Howe 's side.

This season, Tierney is joint with Michael Oliver in being awarded the most Premier League games this season with 15. This means he is believed to be at the top of the table in terms of consistency of performance as a referee. During his 15 games he has only shown a red card once and awarded just three penalties.

Last time Newcastle faced Watford, the game was incident-filled as Sean Longstaff opened the scoring with a long-range strike, only to have the home side peg Newcastle back through Ismaila Sarr. Watford then had what they thought was a late winner ruled out by VAR as Joshua King was adjudged to be offside as he scored from a rebound.

This game looks absolutely key as Newcastle look to take advantage of a run of fixtures that could see them give them their best chance to jump out of the relegation zone at the earliest opportunity as they travel to Vicarage Road this weekend before going to Elland Road to face 16th place Leeds United the weekend after.
