Newcastle United hand promising young keeper free transfer - as Sunderland offer him trial

Newcastle United have decided not to renew the contract of young goalkeeper Nathan Harker.

The 21-year-old is set to leave the club in the summer and has already started the search for his next employers.

Indeed, Harker played on trial for Sunderland's Under-23s in a 2-1 win over Huddersfield Town in the Premier League Cup this week.

The news of his release is a blow for Harker after working his way up the ranks from the Academy.

He was even handed a first team appearance by Rafa Benitez against Royal Antwerp in a friendly back in 2018 in Spain.

However, after returning from a loan stint at Blyth Spartans earlier this term, he learned his contract would not be renewed with the Magpies.

Newcastle currently have Jake Turner and Dan Langley battling out for the gloves at second string level and have senior keepers such as Freddie Woodman, Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot pushing Martin Dubravka for the number 1 spot.

Although, Darlow and Elliot are both out of contract at the end of the season.

Elliot was on the bench for Newcastle's FA Cup tie against Oxford this weekend.
