Newcastle United hand out three new contracts in one day as clutch of youngsters sign up for 2020/21

Newcastle United have handed out three new contracts as they prepare for the 2020/21 season.

Professional contract extensions have been signed by midfielder Jack Young and defensive duo Ryan Barrett and Oisin McEntee.

All three have impressed enough to train with the first team in the last 12 months with Young arguably one of the players of the season for the Under-23s until the season was curtailed early due to the virus pandemic.

McEntee, a 6ft 3in Republic of Ireland defender, spoke about his experiences of training with Steve Bruce's first team squad earlier this term.

The 19-year-old said: "It is surreal and crazy thinking you are on the same pitch as them.

"You are doing your best to impress them.

“Matty and Sean Longstaff have been brilliant for me.

"They always help me out and it’s really good.

"They are both doing very well for themselves so you just try to do what they do."

After committing to a new deal McEntee said on social media: "Very happy to be signing another contract with Newcastle and looking forward to the season getting started!"

Young, also 19, impressed former reserve team coach Neil Redfearn earlier in the season when he said: "There's a lot of traits in him, and I have said to him, that remind me of Lewis Cook at Leeds.

"He's got that athleticism too and over four or five yards he gets things quick on second balls then he uses the ball well."

Young said today on Instagram: "Delighted to sign a new deal at NUFC big thanks to all my friends and family for all the support."

Barrett, a Welsh youth international, took to Twitter to reveal his new contract and said: "I feel very happy to announce that I’ve extended my contract with Newcastle United, I’ve had some setbacks but I’m hopeful for the future."
