Newcastle United hand iconic 9 shirt to Callum Wilson and give Joelinton a new number

Newcastle United have handed Callum Wilson the number 9 shirt ahead of the new season - after getting full agreement from previous occupant Joelinton.

Wilson gets to emulate Alan Shearer, Andy Cole, Les Ferdinand and Wor Jackie to name a few of the famous names to wear the iconic jersey.

The Brazilian forward will now take number 7 for the new campaign, the shirt left vacant by Andy Carroll.

Much was made about Wilson's arrival when he took the number 13 last season and the club decided to stick with Joelinton as number 9.

The £40million striker has struggled for goals in his two years at the club with just 10 to his name so far in all competitions.

And many pundits and supporters have suggested that the pressure of the iconic shirt was weighing heavy on his shoulders along with the big price tag after he arrived from Hoffenheim in Germany.

Wilson told NUFC TV: "They're both iconic shirts and we're both going to contribute a lot to the team.

"You're playing for the badge on the front ultimately but you're wearing a special number on the back and it's just about doing it justice, playing well and helping the team."

Despite handing Joelinton the 7 shirt, United have not clarified publicly that Carroll has departed and the Geordie striker has also not said farewell via any of his social channels.

Steve Bruce confirmed at the end of last season he would hold discussions on a new deal but United have all but confirmed his departure.
