Newcastle United player ratings as Trippier and Dummett shine despite late Watford equaliser

Newcastle United took on a Watford side that had lost seven matches in a row in all competitions.

The Magpies handed debuts to Chris Wood and Kieran Trippier at St James' Park with Eddie Howe also recalling Paul Dummett after months out with a calf injury.

But they could not conjure up the much-needed victory they craved as Allan Saint-Maximin's opener was cancelled out by Joao Pedro late in the game.

Martin Dubravka 7

Had a quiet first hour. Great save to deny Josh King as he rushed out but beaten by Pedro's header after being left exposed.

Kieran Trippier 7

A very convincing display with 95 touches. Dominated his side winning tackles and interceptions throughout.

Jamaal Lascelles 6

Had a steady goal but his afternoon was wrecked as he allowed Pedro to beat him in the air for the equaliser. Won a dozen aerial balls but missed the one that mattered most.

Fabian Schar 6

A couple of clearances but not his finest hour.

Paul Dummett 7

Slotted back in with the minimum of fuss after six months on the sidelines. Won his personal duels and put his body on the line on a crucial day. Beaten narrowly to the ball as Kiko Femina crossed for equaliser.

Ryan Fraser 5

Looked for the openings for Wood but failed to find the big striker. Taken off for Murphy.

Jonjo Shelvey 5

Failed to get to grips with the game in midfield. Didn't win one tackle in the middle.

Sean Longstaff 6

Pushed to the right of a midfield three. Threw himself into six challenges. His commitment was there for all to see.

Joelinton 7

Came close with an effort that hit the bar. Missed another first-half chance. Battled hard in midfield.

Allan Saint-Maximin 8

After a quiet first half, he burst into action after the break with a wonderful strike. Had Watford on the back-foot and perhaps should have stayed on.

Chris Wood 6

After a week in which the service to the big man has been the topic of conversation, he barely had a decent cross to attack. Sent two first-half headers over.

Subs

Jacob Murphy (for Fraser 74)

Just six touches and not much impact.

Miguel Almiron (for Saint-Maximin 86)

*Subs must play 15 minutes to gain a mark.
