Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow appears to close the door on Wales call-up as he outlines England ambitions

Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow insists he hasn't given up on an international career - with England.

Darlow qualifies for Wales through his grandfather, Ken Leek, who was part of the last Welsh team to play in a World Cup back in 1958, but has seemingly shown little appetite for following in his footsteps.

Wales boss Ryan Giggs, who has stepped aside for the upcoming camp due to his recent arrest, tried to take Darlow to the China Cup two years ago, but was told the player was keen to focus on his career at Newcastle.

The 30-year old has been in a scintillating run of recent form for the Magpies this season, which has predictably seen his name crop up once again as a possibility, although Giggs has previously hinted that he'd given up on a potential call-up.

When questioned on the possibility of revisiting an approach, Giggs said he was "happy" with his current crop of keepers.

In any case, the player himself now seems to have set his sights on England.

"It’s the one thing that as a child you want to do," the Newcastle goalkeeper told Mail Online when asked about a potential England call-up.

"There would be no bigger achievement and I just want to leave the window open for it to happen.

"I know I have ability and, if I can get a good run of games and get on some good form, then there is potential for that to happen. I would love nothing more."

His comments are unlikely to come as a surprise, but may nevertheless be met with disappointment on this side of the border, particularly in light of what is a goalkeeping crisis for temporary boss Robert Page.

First choice keeper Wayne Hennessey is already out until at least January, while back-up option Adam Davies is also set to miss the next four to eight weeks.

Leicester City's Danny Ward, the only other senior option available, will surely be the man Wales turn to for these upcoming games.

They face the Americans at the Liberty Stadium in a friendly on November 12, before taking on the Republic of Ireland at Cardiff City Stadium on November 15.

They then finish off the international break with the visit of the Finns at the same venue three days later.
