Newcastle United fans wish former defender Aaron Hughes well as he retires from football aged 39

Former Newcastle United defender Aaron Hughes has retired from football at the age of 39.

Hughes took to social media to confirm his retirement, stating he had 'lived the dream.'

"So my professional playing career has finally come to an end and I’m officially retired.

"Not sure where the time went, but what an incredible journey it’s been.

"Thank you to everyone who helped and supported me along the way. I have quite literally lived the dream! Thank you."

Northern Ireland captain Steven Davis spoke to the press after his country's victory over Belarus and confirmed Hughes had retired.

"Aaron spoke to us after the game and he was a little bit emotional, which is understandable," Davis said.

"He has been a huge player for us over many years, such a consistent performer, and he will be remembered as a proper legend. Aaron still looks as if he could play on for a couple more years, but if he has made a decision to retire, we've got to respect that and wish him well."

Hughes' last club was Hearts - he was released at the end of the last season.

Newcastle United fans took to social media to wish Hughes a happy retirement.

The defender came through the ranks at Newcastle and made over 200 appearances between 1997 and 2005, taking in title challenges and Champions League nights along the way before being sold to Aston Villa for just £1million.

Dave Hughes tweeted: "He was consistent at every level and a true professional who was never interested in the fame and spotlight. Brilliant for #NUFC , should never have sold him."

Fan account NUFC memories posted: "A player who left #nufc far too soon and was sold far too cheaply."
