Newcastle fans could find themselves spending more than twice as much on pay-per-view charges as other clubs under plans by the Premier League
The Premier League has announced new plans to show some future matches on a pay-per-view basis.
Games that aren’t picked for normal broadcast on Sky, BT and Amazon will now be available to watch at the cost of £14.95 each.
Some clubs are shown around three times as often as others, meaning their fans will have to pay more in pay-per-view charges.
Newcastle had 14 league games broadcast live in the UK before lockdown, 48% of their matches played.
Manchester United, meanwhile, were the most televised, having been beamed into pubs and living rooms 23 times out of a total of 29 matches, or 79% of games.
Had those patterns played out over a 38 game season it would have seen Manchester United shown 30 times and Newcastle 18 times.
If fans had decided to watch all their club’s games, then Man United fans would have to pay £119.60 in pay-per-view fees while Newcastle fans would pay £299.00.
For a fan wanting to watch every single Premier League game, the cost of pay-per-view would be astronomical.
There are 149 games left of the season that are expected to fall into the pay-per-view category.
At £14.95 per game a fan would have to fork out £2,234 to watch them all.
That would be on top of existing sport subscriptions that, to watch every available game, cost upwards of £530 a year depending on who you get your broadband through.
