Newcastle United fans tell Sean Longstaff to leave for Manchester United

Sean Longstaff's message to departed Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has triggered responses from Toon fans urging him to now join Manchester United.

was confirmed by the club on Monday afternoon, bringing his three-year stay at St James' Park to an end. Contract negotiations between the club and the former Liverpool and Chelsea boss hit a brick wall and Newcastle fans have reacted angrily to the news.

And their anger extended to telling Longstaff "nobody would blame" him if he joined United, amid interest from the Reds. MEN Sport understands United hold an interest in the 21-year-old among other midfield targets this summer.

After Longstaff thanked Benitez for handing him an opportunity in the Newcastle first team in the 2018/19 season — the Spaniard entrusted the academy graduate with nine first team appearances after his midfield was plagued by injury — Magpies supporters sent the youngster a message.

They seemingly won't stand in Longstaff's way this summer, although it remains to be seen whether United will swoop for the inexperienced midfield starlet.

He tweeted: "Thanks for the opportunity to make my dreams into a reality! All the best @rafabenitezweb."

One supporter replied by saying: "Go to United mate .. too big of a future to waste at NUFC." Another added: "Don’t blame you if you go to United now Sean, nobody’s stepping in your way."
