Newcastle United fans respond to Steve Bruce's decision as Callum Wilson is left on the bench

Newcastle United fans have responded to Steve Bruce's decision to leave Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson on the bench against Burnley.

The Magpies boss has made two defensive alterations to the XI that drew 2-2 with Tottenham last week, with Federico Fernandez and Ciaran Clark replacing Emil Kraft and Jamal Lascelles.

The big team news centres around those on the bench though, with Bruce opting against risking Saint-Maximin and Wilson from the start after injury lay-offs.

It's a decision that Newcastle fans have sympathised with, especially given how important both players have been their attack this season, with more crucial games to come.

Speaking ahead of the match at Turf Moore, Bruce had said: "Callum will be in the squad. We’ve still got two days of training.

"Callum and Allan have trained all week. That’s good news for us. Well, that’s the big decision I have to make, of course (whether they start).

“I’m mindful of the fact that both of them, they aren’t impact, they’re muscle injuries – a groin and a hamstring, which always you’ve got to box carefully with.

“But I’m also wary that we’ve only got six weeks of the season left, so I hope I make the right choice.”

Lascelles misses Newcastle's trip altogether after picking up an injury last weekend, whilst Andy Carroll returns to the bench after missing out with a niggle against Spurs.

"The disappointing news is Jamaal Lascelles is missing with a foot injury suffered last week," Bruce said.

"It's not looking so good at the moment so he will have more scans over the weekend, he won't play this weekend that's for sure, it's a stress fracture."
