Newcastle United fans remind Chris Sutton of his Steve Bruce comments after Neil Lennon claim

Newcastle United supporters have been reacting to Chris Sutton’s comments over Neil Lennon being sacked as manager of Celtic by reminding him of his praise for Steve Bruce.

Lennon’s resignation was confirmed by the Scottish club on Wednesday morning, with the Bhoys currently 18 points adrift of table-topping Rangers in the SPL table.

Magpies fans were outraged earlier in the season when Sutton had a conversation on BBC Radio 5 Live about Steve Bruce. The former Celtic striker could not believe the stick Bruce was getting from the Toon faithful, despite the side’s underwhelming performances and results in the Premier League this season.

Sutton said in December: “I think there needs to be a bit more realism of the difficulty of the job which Steve Bruce took over. Because Rafa was an absolute God, wasn’t he?

“Let’s purely keep this in footballing terms. What has Steve Bruce done that’s been that bad? We’ve spoken about Neil Lennon on here before. I think he’s lucky to be in a job. Would I think that Steve Bruce taking over at Celtic some time in the future would be a disaster? Absolutely not.

“I think Steve Bruce is a capable manager. My opinion of Steve Bruce at Newcastle: I don’t think he’s getting the respect he deserves.

"I don’t think he’s tearing up any trees or doing an unbelievable job, neither do I think that he’s a dud, which a lot of Newcastle fans do think.”

Inevitably, after Sutton’s latest tweet about Lennon’s departure, Newcastle fans have taken the chance to remind him of his comments last year.

Sutton’s tweet read: “Neil Lennon had to go. I know this season has been a disaster but I hope the anger settles down about this season and people respect that Neil has been a great servant to Celtic both as a player and manager.”

Newcastle are currently being dragged into a relegation battle with Fulham in the Premier League. The Cottagers, who are in 18th, are now just three points behind the Magpies, as Bruce looks to guide his team to safety in the top-flight.

United take on Wolves this weekend which is set to be a huge fixture for their survival hopes.
