Newcastle United fans reflect on 'massive' last-gasp defeat for relegation rivals Watford

Newcastle United have been given another lifeline in their battle to stay in the Premier League after Tottenham Hotspur scored a last-minute winner to beat 17th-place Watford on Saturday afternoon.

Davinson Sanchez headed home Heung-min Son's free-kick in the 96th-minute to give Antonio Conte's side an important 1-0 win which condemned the Hornets to a sixth successive defeat in the meantime.

The result leaves Watford just outside the bottom three, two points above the Magpies before the two sides meet in their next Premier League game at St James' Park in mid-January.

It's a game that Eddie Howe will no doubt be targeting to win after facing four of last season's top five within the last four matches, ending that tough run with a 1-1 draw against Manchester United last Monday.

However, the Magpies faithful understand the important of Sanchez's goal, with one fan suggesting there's 'no excuse' for Howe's men to go down 'in this dreadful league'.

Here is what some had to say on social media.

@jimski_king : Watford is absolutely Massive now...win it.. send us on a roll to safety, hope two or three signings in no fresh injuries... C'mon we can do it.

@jackm1892 : Two League games in Jan, both winnable, especially Watford. We should be in a much better position players wise come both those games. There’s literally no excuse for us to go down in this dreadful league. #NUFC

@BroonJiggy : Relief with that Watford defeat. I won't start counting chickens until we have played them in 2 weeks. We have a fantastic opportunity to make ground on the teams above us. #NUFC

@Steve_Harper86 : What a massive goal that could be for #nufc

@malc2176 : Hilariously with 90+6 on the clock… C’mon you Spurs

@BrowneRO3 : I’ll take that. Keeps Watford right in the relegation dog fight #NUFC

@HarryRoySport : That’s now six straight league defeats for Watford. Can honestly see them sacking Ranieri with the #NUFC game coming up on the 15th…

@Gallowgatetwee! : This is massive #NUFC

@Dougie93 : Never celebrated a spurs goal like that before mind! #ToonToon
