'Painful' - Newcastle United fans react to confirmed team news against Aston Villa

Newcastle United fans have been giving their reaction after Steve Bruce named his team to face Aston Villa.

Bruce reverted to a back five for Saturday evening's Premier League clash at Villa Park.

Bruce added Isaac Hayden to his defensive rearguard against Dean Smith's side in the West Midlands.

Javier Manquillo also returned for Newcastle, while Fabian Schar was back and Jonjo Shelvey kept his place.

Bruce stuck with Callum Wilson and Andy Carroll in attack, while his bench included Allan Saint-Maximin and Ryan Fraser.

Even 'Sob on the Tyne' banner creator feels sorry for Newcastle United fans now

There was no place in the squad for Sean Longstaff while Joelinton was dropped after the 3-0 defeat at Arsenal.

NEWCASTLE UNITED: Darlow, Manquillo, Schar, Lascelles, Lewis, Hayden, Shelvey, Hendrick, Almiron, Wilson, Carroll. Subs: Dubravka (gk), M Longstaff, Joelinton, Saint-Maximin, Ritchie, Gayle, Krafth, Fraser, Murphy.

Newcastle fans took to social media to air their views on Bruce's starting line-up and bench.

While many were pleased to see Saint-Maximin back in the squad, there was still plenty of criticism for the under-fire boss.

"The three players who can whip a good ball in for a Carroll or Wilson nod are all on the bench," said one supporter on Twitter.

A second tweeted: "Looking at the line up is painful."

Meanwhile, a third fan said: "Genuinely dread Newcastle team news. Makes my day that little bit worse."
