Newcastle United fans react as Steve Bruce is linked with replacing Rafa Benitez

Newcastle United fans have reacted with disbelief after it was revealed that Steve Bruce is 'under consideration' to replace Rafa Benitez.

The 58-year-old is currently in charge at Sheffield Wednesday and has been linked with the role several times before, but it is now understood that he is on the shortlist being considered by the Newcastle United hierarchy.

Having won the Premier League with Manchester United as a player, his managerial career has never quite reached those heights, but his experience in the Premier League with Birmingham, Wigan, Sunderland and Hull City may be something which appeals to those making the decisions at Newcastle.

The Corbridge-born former defender earlier this month played down links to the job, putting it down to the fact he was born in the North East.

"Maybe because I’m from Newcastle [is the reason I've been linked]," Bruce told BBC Radio Sheffield.

“But no, I’ve been on holiday. I never take any notice of all that sort of speculation or tittle-tattle because the way the newspapers are today, no disrespect, I think there have been 150 managers associated with Newcastle. I would suppose I’m going to be one of them.”

Bruce has now dropped to favourite with most bookmakers, and Newcastle United fans have not reacted kindly to the news.
