Newcastle United fans mock Luuk de Jong after what he did for Barcelona vs Bayern Munich

Former Newcastle United loanee Luuk de Jong endured a terrible start to life as a Barcelona player as he made his debut for the club in their 3-0 loss to Bayern Munich.

The 31-year-old made the bizarre switch to the European giants on deadline day after Antoine Griezmann returned to Atletico Madrid.

After not featuring for the Blaugrana in their first four La Liga fixtures, De Jong was thrown into the starting XI for the first Champions League game of the season against German champions Bayern.

As many were expecting, Barcelona were well beaten as they lost 3-0 to Hansi Flick’s side without even registering a shot on target throughout the 90 minutes.

This, of course, was not purely because of De Jong but his presence up front was minimal as Niklas Sule and Dayot Upamecano barely broke a sweat at the Nou Camp.

One incident in particular epitomised what many Newcastle supporters would have remembered from the Dutchman’s short stay in the North East.

In the first half, De Jong was played through on goal by one of his teammates and, despite starting a few yards offside, he was still comfortably beaten to the ball by Sule who isn’t exactly known for his pace.

Some Newcastle supporters took to social media to express their ongoing shock at seeing De Jong play for one of the biggest clubs in world football.

With the former Magpies loanee coming into the Barcelona attack after both Griezmann and Lionel Messi have recently left the club, he was always going to have a tough time filling the void.

However, if his debut against Bayern is anything to go by then the fans in Catalonia are in for a long season.
