Newcastle United fans make one last poignant and peaceful protest over Rafa Benitez's departure at St James' Park

Newcastle United fans have made one final poignant tribute to departing boss Rafa Benitez .

On the final day of Benitez's contract, fan group Wor Flags - who had vowed to stop their excellent match day displays - draped their iconic Benitez flag just below the offices at St James' Park .

As fans spent the day saying goodbye to Benitez after three years on Tyneside, the peaceful protest struck a chord with supporters on social media.

Wor Flags simply posted: "Rafa’s last day as manager of Newcastle United.

"It’s ridiculous that it has come to this.

"But here’s our tribute this afternoon."

Benitez's departure was announced last Monday and he is expected to release a statement on the expiration of his deal with the Magpies.

Fans have also been posting their gratitude to Benitez using the hashtag #rafaslastday

Toon fan Kev Wood posted: "The man who believed, the man who achieved (what he could) the man who wanted more, the man who the Geordie nation adored.

"We’ll be grateful forever more."
