Newcastle United fans make Kieran Trippier's flight world's most tracked

It's safe to say the arrival of Kieran Trippier to Tyneside has caught the imagination of Newcastle United fans.

The Magpies are set to make the England international their first signing of the January transfer window in a move that has gone down well with supporters.

There has been much interest in how Newcastle's new owners would treat the window, after years of frustration under Mike Ashley.

And as if to underline fans' eagerness to find out what's happening, Trippier's plane to Newcastle was the world's most-tracked flight at one stage on Wednesday.

United fans had be anticipating Trippier’s flight from Madrid since the deal became reality a few days ago. After a few false starts, some fans guessed they had the correct plane this morning.

A few users on FlightRadar24, the world's most popular flight tracking app, started to track an Embraer Phenom 300 which departed Madrid.

It was scheduled to land at Newcastle Airport, but as it was crossing the English Channel there were still only a few hundred people who were tracking the plane.

At that point, the site's most-tracked flight was a US Air Force F-15 over Snowdonia. Also in the running was another F-15 over Wales, as well as two US Air Force planes over Ukraine.

By the time Trippier’s plane had reached the north of England however, the flight number had spread over social media and it became the most tracked flight on the site.

As it turned over Whitley Bay there were 2,708 people tracking the flight, and by the time it made its approach over Brunswick Village there were 3,004 people tracking the flight.

Once it arrived, just before 1pm, some fans had used the information to go to the airport, where at least one fan on the airport’s perimeter filmed the plane as it came in to land.

After stepping out of the private jet, Trippier was whisked off to the training ground for his medical. Needless to say, more fans awaited him.
