Newcastle United fans loving one-word Jake Humphrey tweet in response to Mark Hughes comments

Newcastle United fans have thanked sports presenter Jake Humphrey for defending them against claims that they have unrealistic expectations.

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce has come under increasing pressure following a run of nine games without a win in all competitions.

That included a Carabao Cup quarter-final defeat at the hands of Championship side Brentford and a disappointing loss at rock bottom Sheffield United in the Premier League.

Going into Saturday evening's visit to Aston Villa, Bruce's side are 15th in the table - seven points clear of the relegation zone.

Even 'Sob on the Tyne' banner creator feels sorry for Newcastle United fans now

Mark Hughes is the latest person to suggest that Newcastle supporters may have ideas above their station.

The former Wales, Blackburn, Manchester City, Fulham, QPR, Stoke and Southampton boss told BBC's Football Focus : "I always look at Newcastle and think it's quite a unique club, as in the expectation is way above where it needs to be, really.

"Relative to the amount of success in terms of major trophies, they haven't won anything in a long, long time. That doesn't lower the expectation of the city and the crowd that go to St. James' Park.

"Steve knows that, he's a local lad, and it's a huge job for him because he'll be delighted to be at his local job and he'll want to make a success of it.

"But I think sometimes the expectation at Newcastle overruns maybe their potential."

A video clip of Hughes making his point was posted on the Match of the Day official Twitter account, accompanied by the question: "Agree?"

BT Sport presenter Humphrey responded simply with a one-word answer: "Nope".

That went down well with the Newcastle faithful, with one fan tweeting: "Thanks for always having our backs, Jake!"

A second supporter posted: "As a Newcastle fan you’re one of the few pundits I respect."

Meanwhile, a third fan added: "He gets us."
