Newcastle United fans love Jake Humphrey's Manchester United dig after goal at Old Trafford

BT Sport presenter Jake Humphrey aimed a veiled dig at Manchester United after Allan Saint-Maximin scored a delicious equaliser for Newcastle United at Old Trafford.

Under pressure from a Fulham team that had earned seven points in the last six days and closed the gap to Newcastle to just three points, Steve Bruce's team travelled to Manchester in dire need of collecting a point or three.

Against title-chasing Man Utd, Newcastle went down early to a Marcus Rashford goal. The United winger nutmegged Emil Krafth, then cut inside the stranded right-back, before firing a low shot past Karl Darlow at the near post.

However, the Magpies battled back later in the first half.

Joe Willock clipped a neat ball into the penalty area, and after Harry Maguire's header only went as far as Saint-Maximin.

The winger then slammed home a brilliant half-volley past David de Gea and into the roof of the net.

In celebration of Saint-Maximin's equalising goal, Humphrey tweeted out the following, with a very clear nod to an annoying Man Utd habit.

To those who didn't quite cotton on to Humphrey's meaning, the presenter alluded to the consistent reference to Manchester United as 'United', despite there being a myriad of other teams that also go by the name 'United', including, of course, Man Utd's opponents, Newcastle United.

Sheffield United are another Premier League team who have been painted with the same brush, with pundits and fans referring to them as 'Sheffield', despite there being another professional team in the city, Sheffield Wednesday, and a club called Sheffield FC which just so happens to be the oldest in the world.

Fans certainly noticed Humphrey's play on words and praised him for highlighting the frustrating Manchester bias, something that Newcastle fans have rallied against for many years.

David Burnett replied: "I despise commentators labelling Man U as "United". So disrespectful to another United team they're playing. Does my head in."

Another highlighted the score-bar used by BT Sport which had 'MUN' to delineate Manchester United and 'NEW' to delineate Newcastle United.

Of course, 'MUN' includes the suffix 'United' and 'NEW' only refers to 'Newcastle'.

Another fan said: "Jake continues to understand. To the other sports journalists... do your homework properly please and be more like Jake."

And others took offence to Jermaine Jenas' use of 'United' in commentary, despite the midfielder having previously played in the Northeast.

"Jake, sir, could you please remind Mr Jenas that there are two Uniteds on the pitch? One of who paid his wages for a number of years," one fan replied.

Another added: "Tell your commentators that Jake! Even the one who played for us."
