Newcastle United fans issue positive Jetro Willems verdict after transfer development

Newcastle United fans have issued their verdict on Jetro Willems following a significant transfer development surrounding the Dutch defender.

As reported by Chronicle Live, Willems has rejected the offer of a new contract with Bundesliga side and is keen on returning to Tyneside.

The 26-year-old joined the Magpies on loan last season and was ever-present in the side until suffering a season-ending injury in January, then returning to Germany when his stint in the Premier League came to an end in July.

Willems' contract with the top-tier German side is due to expire at the end of the season and it appears that an exit from the club is imminent.

The Netherlands international is free to discuss a pre-contractual agreement with club's outside of Germany in the New Year and it's understood his preferred choice is to return to St. James' Park.

While Steve Bruce did dip into the market during the summer transfer window to bolster their defensive options, signing Jamaal Lewis from Norwich City, a host of fans on social media are keen on bringing him back to the club.

Plenty expressed their desire for Willems to be signed on a permanent basis after he caught the eye during the first-half of last season.

His experience would provide a significant boost to Bruce's defensive options, although there would certainly be a debate on his position and who he would replace.

As well as the aforementioned Lewis, Newcastle also have Matt Ritchie who can fill into the full-back role on the left side when required.
