Newcastle United fans hit back at Chris Sutton criticism

Newcastle United supporters have hit back at Chris Sutton after the pundit questioned their high expectations of the club.

Newcastle suffered their fourth loss of the season on Saturday as they limped to a 2-0 defeat against Chelsea, only being able to muster a single shot on target and seeing just 28 per cent of possession.

As well as being an incredibly dour and soul sapping performance, it has seen the Magpies drop to 14th place in the table after winning just once in their last five games.

Fans were highly critical of the performance and the game plan of manager Steve Bruce, who set his team up with five defenders and two defensive-midfielders in an unsuccessful attempt to nullify the threat of Chelsea.

It's not the first time that complaints on the team's style have play have been lodged, even if results have been going in Newcastle's favour, with some fans growing bored of the lacklustre showings.

Sutton, in turn, has repeatedly questioned what Newcastle fans want from their club and criticised their expectations. The former striker took another swipe at the fan base on Saturday, arguing that the football under hero Rafa Benitez was no better than the football they get to watch under Bruce.

"Everybody wants to dream, don't they? How big is Newcastle as a club? When did they last win something?" he said on BT Sport.

"Of course, in their own supporters' eyes, they're a big club, but is it really?

"When was the last time they actually really competed consistently? It's true - I understand the passion of the supporters but what do they want?

"It wasn't that good before under Rafa so what do they expect now under Steve Bruce?"

Fans, understandably, have took umbrage with Sutton's comments and told him exactly what they want to see.

Newcastle now have a vital run of fixtures ahead of them in which it will be paramount to improve their form and get some points on the bored.

Their next fives games are against Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, West Brom, Leeds and Fulham before things get a lot harder with matches against Manchester City, Liverpool and Leicester City.
