Newcastle United fans have Tottenham to thank for Liverpool performance

There was a huge shock in the Premier League on Saturday.

It came at Carrow Road, where Norwich City produced a stunning display to beat champions Manchester City 3-2 in the evening kick-off.

But there was almost a shock in the early kick-ff at Anfield too.

Liverpool had to come from behind to beat Newcastle United, with the Geordies taking an early leave to the surprise of everyone inside Anfield and watching on at home.

It would have been something if the top two from last season, the two sides expected to battle it out for the Premier League crown again this year, had lost at the hands of two lesser sides.

Jetro Willems' stunning seventh minute strike gave the Magpies a shock lead, but by half-time they were 2-1 down thanks to a Sadio Mane double.

Mohamed Salah added a third in the second half to wrap up the three points.

Had Newcastle managed to hold on to get something from the game, it would have been the second time this year already that they would have upset one of the big boys, having already beaten Tottenham 1-0 in north London.

And it is Spurs whom the Newcastle fans should be thanking for that follow-up performance in Liverpool.

That is because it gave the players the confidence to go out and replicate.

Manager Steve Bruce said after the defeat to Liverpool: "It changed overnight [after the Spurs game]. All of a sudden, I’m not tactically inept, I’m not this. There were all sorts of questions where you think that’s a bit harsh because you don’t manage 400-odd games in the Premier League without having a little bit of an idea on how to set up a team."

And BT Sport pundits Joe Cole and Jermaine Jenas spoke ahead of the game about the belief it would give Newcastle.

Cole said: "The Tottenham game will give these boys massive confidence because Steve would have put them in a system to stop Liverpool and you get by in some, you don’t get it in others.

"But all of a sudden after winning that game, they’’ll be thinking how they’ve gone to Tottenham, not conceded, that they can come here and do it."

Jenas went on to say: "It all depends if they enjoy doing it. If they enjoy putting in the graft today and actually sticking together as a team, like they did at Tottenham, then they’ve got a chance."
