Newcastle United fans face Covid-19 spot checks as Manchester United release statement

Newcastle United fans travelling to Old Trafford will face random Covid-19 spot checks this weekend.

The checks are to comply with government protocol whereby fans will need to provide Covid-19 certification from October 1.

However, the Red Devils plan to introduce the scheme early, starting with the game against Newcastle this weekend.

Magpies fans will need to prove they are double vaccinated or have proof of a negative lateral flow result within 48 prior to the game.

The process will take pace using the NHS COVID Pass with all under 18's exempt from the process.

A Manchester United statement read: "The Government has indicated that COVID certification checks are likely to be mandatory for those attending large events from 1 October 2021. In line with Premier League guidance, this is expected to apply at all Manchester United matches at Old Trafford.

"Manchester United are obliged to follow this national government guidance to ensure that all supporters can attend matches safely and to try to avoid further capacity restrictions in future.

"Fans coming to any matches at Old Trafford from 11 September should be ready to have their COVID status checked. Spot checks will commence at the Newcastle United game on 11 September.

"The process will be done through use of the NHS COVID Pass which is available via the NHS App or via other NHS services. The NHS COVID Pass lets individuals share their COVID-19 vaccination and test results in a secure way."

Fans will be asked for proof of their vaccination or test results prior to entering the ground.
