Newcastle United fans could be able to attend FA Cup final at Wembley

Fans could be able to watch their side in the FA Cup final at Wembley as plans are being explored to allow 10,000 supporters from each side that makes the final.

The FA Cup campaign is due to be concluded following the Premier League’s restart on June 17, with the dates for the remaining rounds of the competition being set on Friday.

However, due to the coronavirus crisis, all matches in both competitions will be played behind closed doors - but it appears that this could change for the FA Cup final.

The Mirror states plans are being drawn up for 20,000 fans to attend the FA Cup final at Wembley - but only if the coronavirus infection rate has dropped below 0.5 when the game comes around.

Senior stadium officials believe the space available at Wembley would enable them to control the flow of supporters in and out of the stadium.

With lockdown rules beginning to ease, it’s believed in two months’ time the UK’s situation may be different.

While fans will not be able to attend any Premier League matches in the remainder of this season, there is hope that supporters could be allowed back to watch games in a phased approach by September - when the new campaign is likely to start.

A football administrator said: “Fans will be allowed back to see sport at some stage – not just in football. We already know there’s no chance of grounds opening up and being filled to capacity.

“But discussions have taken place about a phased return of spectators when Government health advice allows.

“That will be in smaller, manageable numbers at first and Wembley would seem a good place to start as it’s the country’s biggest stadium.”
