Newcastle United face race against time to get West Brom game on after COVID outbreak

Newcastle United will be eager to get their training ground open for business in time for Monday morning when training for the clash with West Brom will be scheduled to begin.

With the Aston Villa game postponed and set to be rearranged, the Magpies must now set sights on their next fixture at St James' Park.

Newcastle's training ground has been closed since Sunday due to the increase in cases of players either self-isolating or showing signs of Covid-19.

It means a busy time lies ahead for Dr Paul Catterson and his medical team with players set to be tested over the coming days.

United need to eliminate further cases and then determine how long those who have already shown symptoms will need to recover.

The club are yet to identify how the outbreak started but it is believed to have coincided with players returning from the international break last month when players left the United bubble and played in fixtures around Europe and beyond.

A statement from Newcastle said: "All players and training ground staff will be re-tested this week and a meeting between the club,

Premier League and PHE will take place to assess the test results.

"The club will not be naming individuals who have contracted Covid-19 and asks that their privacy is respected."

One scenario would be that Newcastle's training ground remained shut until the middle of next week and, like the clash at Villa, United felt they couldn't field a strong enough squad which would put them in a position to apply for a second postponement.

The Premier League review requests on a "case by case" basis and can approve or reject applications.

Were they to reject the approach they could insist Newcastle field a side that includes players from the club's Under-23 side.

Yet given the lack of first-team experience in the second string, this would only offer two or three players who would fit into the criteria of the Premier League.
