Newcastle United evening headlines with Yohan Cabaye revelation and Rolando Aarons interview

Rolando Aarons has not given up on his future at Newcastle United.

Elsewhere, Gerard Houllier has made a shocking revelation about Yohan Cabaye, and Andy Carroll has admitted to 'gloating' about the weekend victory over his former side.

Here are your top Newcastle United stories for Wednesday, November 6:

Aarons on NUFC future

Rolando Aarons has revealed he was 'massively surprised and disappointed' by Newcastle United's decision not to hand him a squad number this season.

The winger, who is currently on loan at Wycombe Wanderers in League One, has - despite approaching the two-year anniversary of his last outing in the Premier League.

Aarons will be 24 later this month, but said: "I could think: ‘Do you know what, I can’t be bothered with this, I’ll stay with the under-23s, just chill and earn money.’

"But that’s not the sort of person I am.

"I’m not in this for money; I want to actually be a top player. In the long term I want to be a Premier League player and if that happens at Newcastle that would be perfect for me because I’ve come through there. It’s a great club, I love the club and the fans are great there."

Cabaye revelation

Yohan Cabaye was and was 'looking forward to joining' - only for a twist of fate to send the Frenchman to Newcastle United.

That's the view of former Villa manager Gerard Houllier, who has revealed the Lille midfielder had been shown around Villa Park for a potential summer move ahead of the 2011/12 season.

The talented playmaker was one of several recruits earmarked as the former Liverpool boss aimed to put his own stamp on the squad he inherited from Martin O'Neill.

But Houllier's stint at Villa Park was brought to a premature conclusion when he was hospitalised in April 2011, and left the club by mutual consent in June.

Cabaye signed a five-year-deal on Tyneside that same month, and played a key role in the side Alan Pardew guided to an impressive 5th-placed finish.

Carroll 'gloating' over West Ham win

Andy Carroll has on his road back to fitness.

The Magpies striker returned to the club in August and recovered from an ankle operation before making his Premier League comeback.

Carroll is yet to start a game but now has five sub appearances under his belt.

Speaking at the club’s Foundation dinner he said: “It’s been hard.

“I’ve had my ups and downs with injuries, but hopefully I’m past them all now.

“It’s been good, and I’m back in the squad.”

Lee on the Entertainers

Rob Lee believes that most modern top-flight teams are frightened to play the same way as Kevin Keegan's Entertainers.

The Toon legend - who was inducted into Newcastle United's hall of fame this week - says that people still come up to him in the street to talk about the halcyon days of Keegan's swashbuckling team.

In more recent times, United have opted to park the bus with the current squad struggling to move away from Rafa Benitez's ultra defensive model.

Lee told ChronicleLive: "I wish some clubs would do it now.

"We played 4-4-2 and yes we let a lot of goals in but we scored a lot and it was entertaining.

"We had some great players. You don't see it now in the Premier League.

"The difference? Teams don't want to lose games now, but we wanted to win and Keegan told us he wanted to win every week.

"If we were 2-1 up we were told not to shut up shop, we wanted three or four. Surely that is what football is all about? Entertaining the people."

Hall of Fame inductees

Rob Lee has spoken of his pride after being inducted into Newcastle United's hall of fame at the club's annual Foundation awards dinner last night.

The former England and Toon star was joined by close friends Alan Shearer, Steve Harper and John Beresford who spent the night at St James' Park alongside first team squad members Jamaal Lascelles, Andy Carroll, Paul Dummett, Sean Longstaff, Isaac Hayden, Matty Longstaff, Matt Ritchie and Jetro Willems.

Also inducted was Fairs Cup winner David Craig with club ambassador Bob Moncur present in the Bamburgh Suite.

McCarthy on Clark

Republic of Ireland Manager Mick McCarthy has praised Newcastle United defender Ciaran Clark after his performance against West Ham at the weekend.

The Republic of Ireland defender is looking to make his first appearance for the national side since McCarthy took charge last year.

Speaking to the Republic of Ireland official website ahead of their friendly with New Zealand and their Euro 2020 qualifier against Denmark, McCarthy expressed his growing admiration for the experienced defender.

"Ciaran Clark did his chances no harm as well on Saturday,' Said the Ireland boss.

"His goal was one of the highlights for Newcastle but he played well throughout the game and looked settled in their defence."
