Newcastle United evening headlines with striker target identified and Dubravka decision

Here are the Newcastle United evening headlines on Wednesday, February 24.

Toney linked with Magpies

Newcastle are monitoring former striker Ivan Toney, according to a report in The Sun.

Toney has been in breathtaking form for Brentford this season in the Championship and the Magpies, as well as two other Premier League clubs, are watching his developments closely. Leicester City reportedly have the most interest in the forward, but West Ham United and Newcastle are also keen.

Toney has only been at the Bees for a season after his move from League One side Peterborough United, but is among the Championship's top scorers.

CALLUM WILSON WORKING ON RECOVERY

Dubravka to start against Wolves

Martin Dubravka is set to replace Karl Darlow in goal for Newcastle's clash with Wolves this weekend.

That's according to The Telegraph, who are reporting that Steve Bruce is set to recall Dubravka after a spell out of the side.

The Slovak shot-stopper looks like he is going to make his first league start of the season this weekend following Darlow's spell between the posts.

Dubravka was the club's first-choice goalkeeper since he arrived in January 2018, establishing himself as one of the strongest players in his position in the Premier League. However, after he injured his Achilles in pre-season, Darlow came in and was great during the first half of the campaign, making Dubravka's return wait.

Benitez linked with Celtic

Former Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez is one of the early favourites to replace Neil Lennon at Celtic.

The departure of Lennon was confirmed on Wednesday morning, with the Bhoys struggling in the Scottish Premier League this season.

Now, Benitez - who has been out of a job since leaving Chinese club Dalian Professional in January - is one of the frontrunners for the job at Celtic Park.

Betfair Spokesperson Sam Rosbottom said: "Following the departure of Neil Lennon we have seen a flurry of bets on former Celtic defender John Kennedy to take over as permanent manager.

"Just hours ago he was a 13/5 chance, but we have since slashed his odds to 7/4. Prior to that, Rafa Benitez and Steve Clarke were the joint favourites at 11/10, but the punters are backing the caretaker boss to get the job full-time."
