Newcastle United evening headlines with Matt Ritchie's second operation and Sean Longstaff exclusive

Matt Ritchie has been forced to undergo a second operation on the injury sustained at the hands of Hamza Choudhury.

Elsewhere, Sean Longstaff has addressed how he has handled his three-match suspension, and John Carver has given his view on Miguel Almiron.

Here are the top Newcastle United stories for November 28:

Ritchie's second operation

Newcastle United have been rocked by the news that Matt Ritchie has been sidelined for even longer after suffering a fresh setback.

As reported on Chronicle Live on Tuesday, Ritchie has received some disappointing news from a specialist as his rehab following a shocking challenge from Hamza Choudhury continues.

But United have now released further details of the injury, and a statement read today: "United can confirm that Matt Ritchie has undergone a second operation on the ankle injury he sustained during the Carabao Cup clash with Leicester City in August.

Longstaff exclusive

Sean Longstaff says he feels fully recharged and ready for the hectic run of fixtures that lie in wait for the rest of 2019.

The midfielder picked up his first career red card against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the end of October but his three-match suspension also included the international break to extend his agony by a further fortnight.

But Longstaff has been working hard in the gym behind the scenes and admits he feels stronger for the experience.

Carver on Almiron

Former Newcastle United head coach John Carver believes that it could be the right time to hand Miguel Almiron a rest.

The Paraguay international is yet to score or provide an assist for United and did not manage to produce a single cross against Aston Villa.

Carver is a fan of Almiron but feels changes are needed against Manchester City.

Interest in Leeds defender

Newcastle United are keeping tabs on 22-year-old centre-back Ben White.

The Poole-born defender is currently on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion but is attracting interest from other top-flight rivals, including the Magpies and Liverpool.

White is currently under contract at Brighton until 2022 and is believed to be valued at £20million.

Speaking about interest in him earlier in the season, White said: "There is attention and praise and it’s really nice to see and hear it, but I know that I just have to keep focusing on making sure I’m the best I can be every time I step out on to the field.

"People keep saying how well I’m doing but I know I have to keep my head down and continue working hard for the team to make sure we get the results we need to achieve our aim at the end of the season."

Q & A transcript

Steve Bruce prepares for the visit of champions Manchester City this weekend with some key issues to address.

Newcastle United's defeat to Aston Villa on Monday put an end to their recent good form - with Saturday's clash with Pep Guardiola and Co followed by a midweek visit to high-flying Sheffield United.

Much of the focus this week has been on United's misfiring front men, with Joelinton, Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin contributing just one goal between them so far this season.
