Newcastle United evening headlines: Jones on his future, young Toon talent's first pro goal

Here are all your Newcastle United evening headlines for Sunday, November 7.

‘I'm not here to put cones out’: Jones on future

Eddie Howe is looking to bring in his own back-room team at Newcastle United if appointed which may prompt some puzzle-solving at St James' Park, particularly when it comes to caretaker manager Graeme Jones.

Howe is lining up Jason Tindall, who sat next to Howe in the stands for Newcastle's 1-1 draw with Brighton yesterday, as his number 2, and Stephen Purches and Simon Weatherstone as coaches.

Their arrival immediately puts question marks above Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence at Newcastle after the pair came in with Steve Bruce in 2019 but have stayed on to assist Graeme Jones.

Jones says he has been assured of his future while it remains to be seen whether Ben Dawson's role at the senior end of the club continues.

Asked about his position this week, Jones said: "I have not spoken about any specific role. The owners assured me of my future.

"They know I'm not here to put cones out. I'd like to think I'm prepared to get my hands dirty and have responsibility.

"We will have to see, nobody can speak about a specific role yet.”

Ritchie praises Howe as a ‘miracle’ worker

Newcastle winger Matt Ritchie believes 'fantastic' Eddie Howe will kick-start Newcastle's season if appointed as the team's new manager.

The 32-year-old was signed by Howe from Swindon in 2013 and became an integral part of Howe's Bournemouth side.

In an interview with BBC Sport, Ritchie said he 'loved every minute' of playing under Howe and believes he can bring the best out of the group.

Ritchie said: "I am not sure if it is confirmed yet or what is happening, but for me my time with him was fantastic. I loved every minute.

"We have a young, hungry group here and I am sure he can bring out the best in them if he is appointed.

"What he did at Bournemouth was nothing short of a miracle. I have all the praise in the world for him.

"We have some really talented players, it is just about getting the group confidence."

First pro goal for young Toon talent

Newcastle United's twenty-one-year-old defender Lewis Cass scored his first professional goal yesterday while on loan at Port Vale.

A graduate of Newcastle's academy, Cass is out on loan at Port Vale for the whole season and yesterday helped his side win 5-1 against Accrington Stanley in the first round of the FA Cup.

Last season Cass had successful loan at Hartlepool United, helping the side get promoted, and now things seem to be going well at Port Vale, with the team second in League Two and Cass getting plenty of minutes, including starts.

After the match, Cass tweeted: “Into the hat for the next round. Buzzing to score my first goal for the club!”
