Newcastle United evening headlines: Joe Willock's 'underestimated' quality and Joelinton praise

A look at the latest Newcastle United headlines on Saturday, April 29.

Joe Willock's 'underestimated' quality amid growing calls for England call-up for Newcastle star

Joe Willock's pace is an 'underestimated' quality and, on current form, the Newcastle United midfielder should earn an England call-up for this summer's EURO 2024 qualifiers.

That is the views of former England internationals Joleon Lescott and Michael Owen, who were left impressed with another quality display by the Magpies star.

Willock grabbed another eye-catching assist in United's 4-1 win at Everton on Thursday evening, after his dinked cross, following a mazy run down the left-hand side, was headed beyond Jordan Pickford by Joelinton to move Newcastle 2-0 ahead.

Pundits all go the same way as Chris Sutton backs enormous Newcastle United win against Southampton

Newcastle United will go into this weekend's clash against bottom-of-the-league Southampton feeling arguably better than they have done all season long.

Back-to-back 6-1 and 4-1 wins over Tottenham and Everton suggest that Eddie Howe's side are in no mood to play around when it comes to securing their spot in the Champions League next season.

Meanwhile, Southampton are winless in their last eight and are set to be hit for six against a ferocious Magpies side who look like they can't stop scoring goals in recent games.

Newcastle’s new found strength is down to Eddie Howe and is firing them to the Champions League

BBC Sport pundit and former Premier League striker Clinton Morrison has hailed Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe for his side's fluidity in their 4-1 win over Everton on Thursday night.

The Magpies ran riot at Goodison Park, with goals coming from Joelinton, Callum Wilson and Jacob Murphy as Howe's men capped off an excellent week which sees them comfortably sat in third.

An eight-point gap back to fifth is now what stands between Newcastle and their dream of bringing Champions League football back to St James' Park - something that Morrison believes is all down to Howe.

Jurgen Klopp says Newcastle v Spurs result a 'joke' and hails Magpies' form

Jurgen Klopp thought someone was playing a practical joke on him when looking at Newcastle United's 6-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur last weekend. Liverpool are set to face their Champions League rivals in a must win game for both sides, if either want to qualify for the top-four come the end of the season.

The German head coach says he switched on the TV to see the Magpies winning 1-0, but head off to do something else and by the time he returned, Eddie Howe's side were five goals to the good. The Reds boss has hailed Newcastle's form in recent weeks and says individuals are shining for the Toon.

The Magpies are eight points clear of Spurs and nine points clear of Liverpool, but also have a game in hand on the North London outfit.

Newcastle United injury round-up ahead of Southampton's St James' Park visit

Eddie Howe and Newcastle United remain at near full strength as they prepare to take on Southampton at St. James' Park this weekend. The Magpies have won and impressive seven of their last eight Premier League fixtures and are closing in on a Champions League place with just six games remaining.

The Toon have an eight point cushion to Spurs in the Europa League places, but also boast a game in hand on the North London side having thrashed them at St. James' Park last week. The feel good factor on Tyneside is through the roof and a win over struggling Southampton would see Howe's men edge a step closer to a return to Europe's elite competition.

Allan Saint-Maximin and Emil Krafth remain the only absentees heading into this weekend. The latter of the two is not likely to return to action any time soon, while the quick turnaround from the win over Everton means Saint-Maximin is also set to miss the game against the Saints this weekend.

Joelinton 'one of the best players in the Premier League' says former Newcastle United striker

Former Newcastle United striker Michael Owen says Joelinton is one of the best players in the Premier League. It's been quite the turnaround for the Brazilian who looked like a major flop prior to Eddie Howe's arrival on Tyneside.

The 26-year-old has become one of the most feared midfielders in the division and has played a huge part in their quest for European football. Joelinton took home the man-of-the-match award for his performance in the 6-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur and scored in the 4-1 win at Everton on Thursday.

Owen told BT Sport: "They just look great from back to front. I think this season they've been absolutely brilliant."

Newcastle United's 2023 out of contract players as expiry dates edge closer

Newcastle United have six players out of contract in June, as Eddie Howe continues his rebuild at St James' Park ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Newcastle boss has assembled a strong squad during his first three transfer windows at the helm, and this summer is expected to be another big window, especially if Newcastle secure Champions League qualification.

Jonjo Shelvey was the headline name on Newcastle's 2023 out of contract contingent prior to his move to Nottingham Forest in January.
