Newcastle United evening headlines: Carlos and Botman latest as Magpies close in on first summer signing

A round-up of your Newcastle United evening headlines on Thursday, 14 April.

Who is Gleison Bremer? The Brazilian centre-back attracting Newcastle and Liverpool's attention

Newcastle have been casting their eye over Gleison Bremer, Torino's Brazilian centre-back, in case their pursuit of Diego Carlos falls through. The January pursuit of the Sevilla defender was well documented but the Magpies were not able to agree a fee with the La Liga outfit.

With that in mind, they've cast their eye over another Brazilian who's making quite the name for himself in Serie A. Bremer came through the youth system at Atlético Mineiro before signing for Torino in 2018.

The 25-year-old has been made to bide his time before establishing himself as one of the best defenders in the division. So much so, that he's now attracting interest from Liverpool, Newcastle, Inter Milan, Manchester United and Arsenal.

Newcastle United prepare fresh bids for Sven Botman and Diego Carlos but have plenty of options

Newcastle United still have Sevilla star Diego Carlos on their summer shortlist but the Magpies will not get in a bidding war for his services. Although, he could be a viable option with suggestions in Italy growing stronger that another January target Sven Botman of Lille will soon be an AC Milan player.

For all that Newcastle have not given up on Botman with Amanda Staveley even namechecking the Dutch centre-back recently, and as far as United are concerned nothing has been rubber-stamped for the 22-year-old meaning they are still around the table for his services. The Magpies are also in a position to make Botman a superb offer.

Talk of an increased transfer release clause of £67million for Carlos has emerged from the La Liga circuit since Newcastle made multiple bids before leaving the room after an offer of £32million last January. Back then it was suggested in Spain that an offer closer to £50million would be the tipping point for the 29-year-old centre-back.

Newcastle's summer transfer plan Ashworth will love after £60,000 bargain ignored in Ashley era

Newcastle United supporters may have been expecting someone very different, but Alex Murphy could prove a fitting first summer signing of this new era. Yes, Newcastle will spend millions on first-team ready stars in the coming months, but the hierarchy ultimately want to create a sustainable club where talented youngsters eventually make the step up from the academy to represent the first team.

Eddie Howe, himself, has spoken about how 'that part of the club needs to be brought closer to the first team' in the years to come. Central to that will be spotting some of the very best prospects both in the North East and further afield in countries like Ireland.

It is important to stress that Murphy will go straight into the under-23s if, as expected, the deal goes through and there are no guarantees that the Galway United youngster will ever play for Newcastle's first team. However, at the same time, Murphy has been earmarked as a player with real potential, having made his professional debut at just 16 and captaining his country at under-18 level.

Darwin Nunez 'rough diamond' verdict delivered amid Newcastle United transfer links

Darwin Nunez is a 'rough diamond' and 'nowhere near the finished article' amid links over a potential transfer to Newcastle United. That is the view of BT Sport pundits Peter Crouch, Steve McManaman and Michael Owen who delivered their verdicts on the in-form Benfica forward.

Nunez netted in both legs of the Portuguese outfit's Champions League quarter-final exit to Liverpool to take his tally for the season to 32 goals. The Uruguay international has been heavily linked with a blockbuster summer transfer, and the 22-year-old recently changed agents ahead of an expected deal.

European heavyweights Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Manchester United and PSG have all been credited with an interest in the forward. Reports claim Newcastle failed in a January approach, and Eddie Howe's side continue to be linked with a move.

Newcastle staff member leaves after nearly 10 years at the club as 'time has come to move on'

Billy Coulston has revealed that he has left Newcastle United after nearly a decade working as an analyst at a 'special football club'.

Coulston stepped up as a first-team analyst after the Magpies were promoted to the Premier League in 2017 and worked under Rafa Benitez, Steve Bruce and Eddie Howe. While Coulston operated behind the scenes, and away from the cameras, supporters may recognise the Northumbria University graduate from the team photographs taken in the dressing room after recent wins.

The role of first-team analyst was one of many titles Coulston held during his time at the club. After a spell as an academy performance analyst intern, Coulston became Newcastle's lead academy analyst in 2012 before taking up a position as the under-23s' development squad analyst. Coulston made the step up to the senior team as an opposition scout in 2016 and, then, finally, a first-team analyst in 2017.

Coulston has witnessed a number of changes at the club in that time and the new owners have been keen to ensure the analysis department has adequate support. In fact, in the last few months alone, Newcastle have appointed Mark Leyland as the club's first ever coach analyst while the Magpies have also signed a multi-year deal with StatsBomb to serve as its data and analytics provider.
