Newcastle United evening headlines as Steve Bruce drops Miguel Almiron hint and sets target

Here are your Newcastle United evening headlines for Friday, March 19.

Bruce makes relegation battle claim

Steve Bruce says that Newcastle United players must accept that they are in a relegation battle ahead of their clash against Brighton.

The Magpies could sink into the bottom three if Fulham beat Leeds tonight (Friday) at Craven Cottage.

But Bruce feels that Newcastle can pull away from danger if they can find the form that had them in the top 10 after the first 10 matches.

Bruce said: "We have to accept we are in a relegation scrap and accept where we are.

"We had an awful run and hopefully now that has passed us. Can we now get 17 or 18 points now in the last 10 games like we did at the start? That would be wonderful."

Almiron set for Brighton start

Miguel Almiron "has a chance" of starting against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday night at the Amex Stadium.

Newcastle United head coach Steve Bruce suggested that Almiron will at least be in the squad for the trip to the South Coast.

Almiron returned to the training pitch this week and while Callum Wilson has also been back in the fold, he is unlikely to start this weekend against the Seagulls.

"They are both back on the grass," Bruce said.

"We still think after the international break for Callum. We will see how Almiron is. He has got a chance, we will see."

Dubaravka dismisses 'must-win' match

Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka insists Saturday's huge clash with Brighton and Hove Albion is not a "must-win" game.

The Magpies head to the Amex Stadium on Saturday one point adrift of the 16th placed Seagulls and two points clear of the Premier League's relegation zone.

However, a win for 18th placed Fulham over Leeds United on Friday evening will see Newcastle kick off in Sussex in the bottom three.

Newcastle have won just two of their last 19 matches in all competitions.

External pressure is rising on Steve Bruce's position as manager but, as yet, the club remain unmoved on their support of the head coach.

It all adds to the pressure cooker ahead of the trip to the Seagulls and while the importance of the match is not lost on Newcastle's players, Dubravka insists it is not quite at the stage where the match must be labelled a "must-win".

"I want to win every game, no matter what team I play against," Dubravka told NUFC TV.
