Newcastle United evening headlines as Mike Ashley's takeover dispute gets under way

Here are your Newcastle United evening headlines on Friday, June 11.

Newcastle takeover: What to expect today from start of Mike Ashley's anti-competition claim

Mike Ashley's legal battle with the Premier League got under way today as he started a double-barrelled fight to push through the takeover he agreed with Amanda Staveley and her Middle East consortium last April.

However, today marked only the beginning of Ashley's Competition Appeal Tribunal as he looks to stake a claim against the Premier League for blocking the £340million sale of the Magpies to Staveley, the Reuben brothers and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.

In the build-up to the anti-competition claim, the Ashley camp have briefed with confidence that they will get the result fans are hoping for and that the Premier League were wrong not to approve the sale that would have ended the Toon tycoon's tenure in charge.

It is believed that the Premier League will try to make an application today that the CAT claim should not go ahead.

Ashley's St James' Holdings will get the chance to have their say on this, but that could take until the end of June or longer.

Newcastle United to play in Papa John's Trophy in 2021/22 season

Newcastle United have confirmed they will play in the Papa John's Trophy next season.

The tournament, which was called the Checkatrade Trophy when Newcastle first participated in 2018, has not been kind to the Magpies in recent seasons as they struggled to qualify for the knockout stages.

After reaching the last 16 - when they were beaten by Sunderland's senior side at the Stadium of Light - the second string have failed to progress past the group segment.

A Newcastle statement read: "A United under-21 side will again take part in the Papa John's Trophy during the 2021/22 campaign, it has been confirmed.

"Chris Hogg and Peter Ramage's side are one of 16 Category One academies joining the 48 teams from League One and Two for next season's competition."
