Newcastle United evening headlines as Magpies' net spend explained, Paul Merson's classy reply

Here are the Newcastle United evening headlines on Tuesday, February 9.

Magpies' net spend

Newcastle have one of the lowest net spends of every Premier League club over the last 10 transfer windows, a new study has revealed.

Recent research from the CIES Football Observatory has revealed that the Magpies are listed as third-highest in regards to 'balance' in the bank from transfer dealings since the summer of 2016.

Newcastle have a balance of just higher than -£67million with only West Bromwich Albion and Southampton having lower 'negative net spend' with -£64m and -£44m, respectively.

The research suggests that the Tyneside club have spent £269m, earning £202m in player sales.

Mike Ashley has often been criticised by Newcastle supporters for not backing managers financially during his ownership of the club and these latest figures appear to confirm just that.

Hayden's performance praised

Isaac Hayden has been picked in the BBC team of the week after his impressive display against Southampton at the weekend.

Hayden, who is currently operating in the centre of defence for the Magpies due to injury problems, put in an excellent performance in the 3-2 win over the Saints.

Garth Crooks was full of praise for the 25-year-old, describing him as the man of the match in the five-goal thriller.

"For me, Newcastle's 3-2 win against Southampton on Saturday was the match of the day," Crooks wrote for the BBC as he picked his team of the week.

"The conditions became progressively worse but the quality of football under the circumstances was just tremendous.

"Newcastle played with 10 men for half-an-hour and nine men for 18 minutes - including seven minutes of stoppage time - but miraculously held on for three points.

"Isaac Hayden was magnificent in the last 20 minutes of this fixture. His clearance off the line from a Danny Ings sliced shot was outstanding. His ability to sense the danger and hold off the Saints bombardment was quite brilliant."

Merson's classy message

Paul Merson pronounced Allan Saint-Maximin's name wrong while on Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday duty at the weekend, but the pundit has now apologised.

The French winger was one of the stars in the Newcastle victory over Southampton and when referencing the 23-year-old, Merson said: 'Sam Maximus'.

Saint-Maximin, though, saw the funny side and wrote in a tweet: "Congrats to our new players @Joewillock and Sam Maximus for their game ! @PaulMerse told me that you did well guys."

The tweet was later replied to by the former Arsenal midfielder, who simply said: "Apologies mate... well played to both of you today" accompanied by a laughing and clapping emoji.
