Newcastle United evening headlines as Kieran Trippier announcement is scheduled

Here's a round-up of your Newcastle United evening headlines on Thursday, 6 January.

Kieran Trippier move 'delayed' but expected tomorrow

The Toon Army will have to wait until they see the unveiling of Kieran Trippier in a Newcastle United shirt after a slight 'delay.'

Keith Downie of Sky Sports claims the move will now be officially unveiled tomorrow, after the delay.

Downie tweeted: "Everything is okay with the Kieran Tripper deal Newcastle fans, it’s just taking a bit longer than usual.

"Understand final paperwork & formalities should be completed tomorrow morning with the player unveiled then."

Sam Wallace of the Telegraph also confirmed the news, stating the England International would sign a deal until 2024 with the option of an additional year.

Seville play hardball with Diego Carlos

Newcastle United could have to increase their offer for Seville star Diego Carlos.

The La Liga title contenders don't want to part company with the Brazil international centre-back and Seville have slapped a £35million price tag on the defender.

Carlos has two years left on his current deal and has made 25 appearances for Seville this season, scoring twice in La Liga.

Seville are desperate to hang on to Carlos as they push for the title and the Europa League trophy this term with a knockout clash against Dinamo Zagreb coming up next month.

Newcastle's next move has been for a centre-back after the arrival of Atletico Madrid full-back Kieran Trippier.

But they remain in dialogue for Lille's Sven Botman while Samuel Umtiti of Barcelona is a loan option.

Bookmakers quickly respond Aaron Ramsey speculation

Newcastle United are certainly not messing about in this transfer window and they will be looking to add to the imminent signing of Kieran Trippier.

There are a number of names that have been linked with a move to the north east over the last few weeks with everyone aware of the riches available.

The man most heavily linked in the last 24 hours is Lucas Digne who has fallen out of favour at Everton and looks set to leave before the end of the month.

Newcastle have reportedly lodged a bid for the Frenchman as they continue to track several other defensive targets.

There is still belief amongst the fanbase that, whilst the backline is certainly the priority, reinforcements are also needed in midfield.

Outside of Joe Willock and Jonjo Shelvey, there aren’t many options for Eddie Howe in that area of the pitch and it could be somewhere he looks to strengthen this month.

Kieran Trippier blown away by Newcastle United welcome

Kieran Trippier will be unveiled as Newcastle United's first signing of the club's new era at St James' Park.

Trippier, a modest hard working Bury-born lad, has been blown away by the welcome he's received already on Tyneside with fans waiting at the Airport and the training ground to greet him.

The England full-back is completing the usual formalities of a transfer window deal but has already spoke at length with Eddie Howe and will be presented to fans in due course.

Newcastle were handed 48 hours to get the deal done by Atletico Madrid and the club have adhered to the deadline without any hassle to get the deal done in rapid fashion.

By completing the move so early in the window they have eliminated the threat of rivals moving in with solid interest from Chelsea and long-term admiration from Manchester United for the ex-Burnley star.

The crucial week that could dictate Premier League survival

Newcastle United hope quality reinforcements in the January transfer window will make the vital difference in their aim to climb away from the Premier League relegation battle.

However, as well as improving their own results, it's the nature of a relegation battle that the form of teams around Newcastle will be hugely important in dictating what it will take to escape from the bottom three.

Thanks to a rescheduling of an earlier Covid postponement, one week could have a huge impact on the way the relegation battle shakes out.

Burnley and Watford had been due to face one another last month but the fixture was lost among a wave of postponements, meaning it will now take place on the 18th January. As it stands, these are the two clubs immediately above Eddie Howe 's side, so a draw here would be the perfect result for the Magpies.

However, there is a chance Newcastle might have leapfrogged their fellow relegation strugglers before the game even takes place, as Watford travel to St James' Park just three days before the Burnley clash.
